Imagine a world where these photographs were discovered in an explorer’s 19th century travel journal.
City Tribes is a photo essay, one chapter of an ongoing exploration following the voguing (and Ball culture) around Europe. Their houses serve as alternative families, led by “mothers” and “fathers”, which provide guidance to their house “children”.
These performers and their houses are gathered from across Europe, and are revealed to us as types of urban tribes.
This presents us with an alternative view of romanticized colonialism.
